Boasting Nikon's fully multicoated optical system and a versatile 4 to 12x magnification range, the ProStaff 4-12x40 riflescope helps put virtually any shot in your comfort zone. The scope's optical system transmits up to 98 percent of available light, ensuring maximum brightness in low-light, low-contrast hunting situations. To simplify field adjustments, Nikon also integrated a zero-reset turret into the riflescope. Just sight in as usual, lift the spring-loaded adjustment knob, rotate to your "zero," and re-engage. Field adjustments are now as simple as dialing in your subsequent ranges. And hunters will love the patented BDC reticle, which allows them to hold "dead on" at ranges exceeding those previously thought possible. The BDC's unique see-through ballistic circles offer an incredible advantage for long-range shooting, yet allow a normal sight picture for shorter-range shots where the crosshair itself is the aiming point.

Nothing boosts a shooter's level of confidence better than generous, constant eye relief, which is why Nikon provided 3.7 inches of eye relief in the ProStaff. No more rough kickback from heavy recoiling cartridges, lightweight rifles, severe shooting angles, and just plain excitement. Other features include a nitrogen-filled, O-ring-sealed housing that's waterproof and fogproof; support for an optional sunshade accessory for bright, rainy, or dusty conditions; and a quick-focus eyepiece. The perfect riflescope for hunters who travel the country hunting game in diverse conditions, the ProStaff 4-12x40 riflescope carries a lifetime warranty.

The ProStaff riflescope includes a BDC reticle with see-through ballistic circles.

5Awesome scope
By M. Stephens
I bought this scope a couple months ago for a new Remington 700 .223. I own several other brands of scopes in the same price range, including Simmons and Bushnell, mostly in a 3-9 model. With that said, this is by far my favorite scope.

I have not been impressed with the eye relief of the Simmons scopes or the clarity of the Bushnell scopes at longer ranges. This scope wins in every category, and finally I have a scope for less than $200 that I am completely satisfied with. I have also used friends' guns with higher end Leupold scopes, and while they are fantastic scopes, I wouldn't consider buying one after owning a ProStaff. I am currently selling off some of my old scopes and looking to replace them with ProStaffs as they go. If you are in the market and don't know whether or not to get the 3-9 or 4-12, I will tell you that for $30 it was well worth the upgrade, the image is very crisp at 12 magnification. When I bought my scope it was $197 with free Prime shipping, since then Amazon has removed the free shipping option, but I'm watching to see if they get it back before ordering.

Another reviewer received a defective scope, I wouldn't let this scare you away. Nikon is a reputable company and stands behind its products. I have had my scope in the rain a few times and it hasn't fogged or given me any reason to be concerned. I also recommend the Nikon 8053 Matte Sunshade for 40mm Scope, found here on Amazon, to compliment the scope.

** Update **
I bought 2 more of these scopes last week and have attached them to guns and sighted them in. Absolutely no issues, very happy with all 3 scopes. I did need to upgrade to better dovetail scope mounts for my guns, as this scope has more weight to it than my old 3x9 scopes and the mounts were sliding back on my rails. Something to consider if you have a small scope currently attached or are buying new scope mounts. I've found you need to spend $20+ on a mount if you don't want a scope of this size to move on you, don't waste your time with cheap models.

5Well worth the price
By VicK
I bought my Marlin XS7 rifle with a scope knowing the scope would be mediocre quality, it does work fine but upgrade was in the plans anyways. I looked at Leupold and almost went for one of the models that compared to Nikon, with all things being equal except the price, I had to go with Nikon.
I took it to the range and sighted it in, I could clearly see the 308 Winchester bullet holes at a 100 yards, almost regret buying that spotting scope.
The scope's 12 x magnification is crisp and clear, unlike my generic scope that came with rifle, garbage that was labeled as 3-9 was only good to 7 x magnification. At 12 x magnification and eye peace dialed in for celerity, I could shoot all day long and clearly see every new hole in the paper target at a 100 yard distance, I don't need anything better or more expensive.
The scope shows high degree of quality workmanship, optics clarity exceeds expectations and life time warranty provides the confidence.
I recently bought several items made in USA just for the sake of promoting the concept, however, price and quality has to be balanced to earn the top spot on my shopping list.
I bet there is a segment of people who would claim that a Leupold toilet paper is worth $20 per role because it feels softer against the skin then other brands but I have to spend my hard earned dollar in a way that rewards me too, this Nikon scope made that happen, not made in China was also a pleasant surprise.
If you have money to waste, buy something else, if you don't, this is best buy in the category.
I have yet to explore the BDC charts at Nikon website, one of those things that extend the product functionality beyond actual needs as I don't really plan on shooting a deer at distance past 200 yards, but wanted to be equipped for it just in case.
Price of this scope was under $190, no tax and free shipping, I am very pleased with result and highly recommend this model as it has features and quality build that quickly runs up to $300 range in other brands, that extra cash left in my wallet paid for a nice 18 x 55 x 60 Celestron spotting scope, best price on both was at Amazon.

5Excellent scope both in price and application!
By Martin J. Edwards
I bought this scope at the end of the season last year shortly after purchasing a new 300 win mag. I sighted it in at 100 yards and then put it away for the winter. In preparation for hunting season this year, I headed out to the firing range. All I've previously owned is 3-9x40 (no bdc), so I was anxious to see what the bdc would/could do for me. I have to say, I am very impressed with this scope. It is very clear, easily adjustable, and the spot on calculator provided on the Nikon website is a neat deal as well. Last night after work, I went to the range and shot out to the predetermined yardages based on the spot on calculator - they were dead on and I shot targets out to 680 yards, hitting them every time. I love this scope and have recommended it to friends and coworkers. I only paid $189 at Scheels and I thought that was a damn good deal. I highly recommend the bdc and checking out the "spot on" application on the nikon website.

*Update*(Nov 2011) I shot my elk opening morning at 525 yards. I love this scope.
